In this presentation I will:Discuss the benefits of diversifying our classroom libraries and share ideas and resources on how to seek funds for purchasing diverse books (grants and parent wish lists), and/or how to receive free diverse books. Share how I used diverse books in my classroom, discuss the social studies house bill 19-1192 and review the law and what it covers. I will address the importance of this bill and how it can support teachers as they embark on reading books that may be seen as controversial with parents and other teachers or administrators; Participants will learn how to select diverse books for their classroom. Gain access to book lists, diverse book stores, and resources for choosing books. Discuss what the concept of mirror and windows and imply and the importance of being a bridge and ally for parents and children to gain access to these reading materials.
